Aico, the European Market Leader in Home Life Safety, has welcomed students from Longlands Primary School, to their headquarters for their first educational workshop of 2022, which included a fire awareness session with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The visit provided a selection of engaging and informative sessions led by Aico colleagues, including practical challenges, technical workshops and team building activities. The workshop is designed to give an insight into the world of work and expose students to some of the skills they may need in the future, such as effective communication and teamwork.
Steve Cross, teacher at Longlands Primary School comments, “I thought the
whole day was an excellent experience for the children with a superb variety of tasks that were suitable for all. The children had a fantastic time and had smiles throughout the day and haven’t stopped talking about it since we came back. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Aico for a place for schools to go if they want a hands-on, relaxed experience of STEM activities and team building.”
The workshop began with a tour of Aico’s headquarters; the students gained an insight into the different departments and learnt about the various job roles within the company. This was complemented by a ‘Guess My Job’ activity, where students were encouraged to ask Aico colleagues questions about their careers and what skills they needed to do their job.
Students were also given the opportunity to participate in practical workshops. Members of Aico’s technical team taught the children the basic electrical wiring skills that are required to install a smoke alarm base plate. The second session saw Aico colleagues facilitate a ‘box challenge’ where students learnt how to pack an order, competing against each other to accurately complete the challenge in the quickest time.
The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service also delivered a fire hazard and prevention session, designed to educate the students on fire safety awareness, what to do in the event of a fire and the role of a firefighter.
Andrew Bradbury of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service adds, “It was great to be able to support Aico in a really professional and engaging event, the fantastic facilities at Aico really helped engage young people to talk about fire safety.”
Aico began working with Longlands Primary School, Market Drayton, in 2020 by contributing funds for the school’s new social farm, and were delighted to continue the support through hosting the educational workshop.
