Oswestry’s Street Rangers are here to provide both a reassuring presence in the town, and pro-active support in dealing with anti-social behaviour, shoplifting, and other activities that impacts on the enjoyment of our lovely town.
Our shops and businesses in the town centre need practical support to handle these challenges with measures to strengthen and enhance the safety of staff and customers.
The Street Ranger model has been successfully applied in many towns and cities. Oswestry BID are using best practice to guide the design of the service, and adding bespoke aspects tailored specifically to Oswestry town centre’s needs.
The key aims of Oswestry Street Rangers are as follows:
– reduce retail crime and anti-social behaviour
– to raise the feeling of safety and order in town for residents, visitors, shops & businesses
– to provide a service to shops and venues to support them if required, and inform them of new initiatives
– and to provide a vital channel and resource to work with the police with on-the-ground intelligence gathering, and channel for local measures such as the Smartwater scheme.
The Street Rangers are funded by Oswestry BID, are part of the BID team, and will play an essential role in helping us meet our objectives of improving the town, making it an even better place to do business, to visit, enjoy, live and work.
Yes, the Street Rangers are part of the Community Guardianship approach fostered by West Mercia Police. This complements the Local Policing Charter that guides the excellent work that their Safer Neighbourhood Team do in Oswestry. We’d like to thank West Mercia Police for their valuable assistance and guidance in operational training, and appreciate their day-to-day support.
Oswestry’s Street Rangers will be a visible presence around the town, providing community engagement and playing a key role in the town’s security network. Focussed on reducing anti-social behaviour and crime in the town centre, the Street Rangers will work closely with Oswestry BID, West Mercia Police, Oswestry Town Council, Shropshire Council, and other partners, to bring a much-needed resource to town, keeping clear lines of communication with businesses, and contributing to the pro-active management of the town centre.
